Can You Sandblast Epoxy?

You can sandblast epoxy and many other substances using our innovative blasting abrasives. 10X Engineered Materials superoxalloy abrasives are unique because they are made from mineral wool, and they are the only biosoluble abrasives on the market.

Sandblasting forcibly propels a stream of abrasive material and high-pressure air or water against a surface under high pressure to remove coatings and contaminants. Mineral wool’s unique composition is an amorphous solid, and the particles are also tempered, which allows operators to blast our abrasive particles at higher pressures to sandblast epoxy coatings away faster than standard media would allow.

How to Remove Epoxy

Epoxy is a type of thermoset polymer with strong adhesive properties and excellent chemical resistance, making it a popular coating for many substrates. Sandblasting epoxy with superoxalloy abrasives is the most efficient way of cleaning surfaces and preparing them for a fresh coat of paint, powder coating, or a new coat of epoxy. Sandblasting also removes corrosion, rust, grime, most oils, and other unwanted surface contaminants.

To remove an epoxy coating with a sandblaster, point the nozzle at the workpiece and activate it, then move over the surface in even strokes until you reach the underlying material. Once you have reached the underlying substrate, slightly angle the abrasive and air stream to direct the abrasive underneath the edge of the epoxy where it meets the steel. This technique can speed up your blasting.

What Size Sandblaster Nozzle Do I Need When Sandblasting Epoxy?

The size of the sandblaster nozzle will reflect the job’s requirements. You can use small nozzles for smaller parts or when working inside a blast cabinet, while larger nozzles are ideal for outdoor jobs and large workpieces like ships.

Nozzle sizes increase by increments of 1/16 inch. Check them for wear frequently to keep your equipment at its best and maintain productivity.

Benefits of Using Our Products for Epoxy Removal

Our state-of-the-art solutions provide multiple benefits, including:

  • Less dust: Our durable superoxalloy abrasives generate less dust, which is better for workers’ visibility, their lungs, and overall health. A cleaner working environment stays safer and offers higher visibility, resulting in better-quality epoxy removal jobs.
  • Greater sustainability: Our abrasives stay intact over more cycles and cut longer, requiring a lot less abrasive material to accomplish the task. Using less media when sandblasting tough materials like epoxy means you can save money in the long run and allows you to maximize your investment in the overall blasting operation.
  • Better surface finishes: Our superoxalloy abrasives are the most efficient abrasives for stripping away epoxy quickly and leave an exceptionally clean, SSPC SP-5 white metal surface behind for the next process. Their mineral wool composition means they won’t leave embedded particles in the workpiece, and because of our ultra-low free iron levels, we do not suffer from AIC or Abrasive Induced Corrosion, so delaying the onset of rust bloom and promoting a better surface finish.
  • High speed: The distinct particle toughness and resistance to fracture or higher pressure threshold that 10X’s superoxalloy abrasives tempered particles are known for enable operators to achieve faster blasting speeds at a lower cost per square foot compared to other abrasive blasting media, increasing your operation’s overall productivity and profitability.
